In Across the Leagues today:
I’ve got lots to tell you about today - spanning the domestic leagues, European cups, and a Major International tournament…
Let’s start with the big one. The World Cup is coming up fast. There’s going to be a short, sharp run-up next week, just as soon as the Premier League et al have got their final pre-Qatar games out of the way this coming weekend…
On that note, maybe we should look out for some ‘low cards’ results in the top-flight this Saturday & Sunday. The thinking being, World Cup-bound stars might think twice before flying into too many full-blooded tackles. You don’t want to get injured and miss the biggest tournament on the planet…
On a similar theme, expect many of the big clubs to give some of their usual first XI starters a night off in this week’s EFL Cup ties.
Off to Scotland now, where there are midweek fixtures in the Premiership, followed by a final pre-World Cup round this weekend…
No goals for our 33/1 Each Way top-scorer selection Luis ‘Duk’ Lopes last week. He’s set to be in action again for Aberdeen tonight, away at Livingston…
Our pre-season Scottish Premiership pick Lawrence Shankland found the net again though, bagging the match-winning penalty for 10-man Hearts in a 3-2 thriller v Motherwell.
Shankland now has 9 league goals in 2022/23, putting him in with a share of the Top 3 (Each Way) places, as it stands.
In our pre-season analysis, we noted how valuable it can be to back a penalty-taker in the Top Goalscorer markets. Shankland is on pens for Hearts, and has a 100% conversion rate from the spot - bagging four out of four penalty kicks in the league since joining the Jam Tarts this season.
From odds of 20/1 - 14/1 when we backed him before a ball was kicked, Shankland is now 10/1 at best. That price is with Bet365 and Skybet, with the standard Scottish Premiership place terms of 1/4 odds 1-3, Each Way.
Moving across to the European club cup competitions now, and we have three teams running for us in a huge-odds Trixie this season…
Taking in the UEFA Champions League, Europa League, and Europa Conference League. We have Manchester City, Roma, and Villarreal flying the flag for us. With the treble in that tournament-winner mega-acca worth a top-price 419/1…
After the Knockout/ Playoff draws were made on Monday, that combo is now a best price 279/1 with Betfred.
In the Champions League Round of 16, Man City are drawn against RB Leipzig.
In the Europa League, Roma will need to get past Salzburg in a Playoff.
While in the Conference League, Villarreal wait to find out their knockout opponent in the spring. Having won their Group at a canter, the Spanish side can take a breather from European commitments until the Playoffs have been completed in February.
I told you there was lots to talk about!
Back to the upcoming World Cup now. And remember…
I’ll be giving the tournament the full, daily treatment, exclusively in Across the Leagues…
