We’re up and running…

I’m away from my desk this week. I’m cramming in a short holiday. I’m going to be walking the Cornish coastline. A bit of it, anyway. Hopefully the coastal paths will be okay for social distancing…

Where I’m going, there’s no Wi-Fi. In fact, I’m told I might not even get a mobile phone signal there. We’ve even packed some DVDs. It’ll be like going back in time.

In terms of your Across the Leagues emails, that means I’ll be back in your inbox with my next analysis and advice as of next Monday, 28th September. There’ll be lots to talk about, I’m sure. As the football is coming thick & fast…

In the meantime, I’ll be leaving you in the capable hands of robots. Or, the Across the Leagues website, to be more precise…

17 leagues for you…

Your members-only website is now up & running, fully charged and all shiny & new for the 2020/21 season. With our unique betting stats now stretching to 17 leagues. See below for the colourful list and countries and divisions.

Off the mark, and on the spot…

It’s early days in the new season, of course. It’ll take a while for the 2020/21 stats and form to build up on the website.

The Russian Premier League is already eight games in though. And we used that data to pick out a 5/1 Anytime Scorer winner at the weekend…

Christian Noboa continued his purple patch, opening the scoring from the penalty spot for Sochi, in Sunday’s 3-2 defeat at Arsenal Tula. The 35-year-old midfielder has now got six goals in eight games. Odds of 5/1 and 3/1 on Noboa to score in that game were good value.

Elsewhere in our weekend picks, and at a similar price to score, Konstantin Kuchaev didn’t find the net for CSKA Moscow this time. He remains one to look out for, though.

And 4/1 Anytime Scorer selection, Genoa left-back and penalty chief, Domenico Cristico, went down as a void, with stakes returned. Cristico sat out the game through injury.

All in all, early days though it may be, it was good to get off the mark with a couple of match winners over the last few days.

On the penalty-taking front – and with the longer-term picture in mind – it was also good to see Aleksandar Mitrovic get off the mark for Fulham in the Premier League…

Mitrovic got two goals in a 4-3 defeat at Leeds, with the first from the penalty spot. The Fulham striker was our pre-season, 100/1 Each Way outsider in the 2020/21 Top Goalscorer market.

And in the Championship, another of our 100/1 shots, Lyndon Dykes, is also on two goals. Scoring from the penalty spot in both of his first two league appearances for QPR.

Last Friday we also looked at some potential penalty-takers to look out for in Portugal this season. Week one of the new Portuguese league campaign saw Alex Telles bag not one but two penalties for Porto, who won 3-1 v Braga. That builds on the eight pens he scored last season.

Avoiding the shorties…

Going back to those 5/1 and 3/1 Anytime Scorer prices on Christian Noboa at the weekend. It’s worth pointing out that many players at much shorter prices to score First don’t hit the mark. And you & I do well to avoid those situations…

For example, two-time reigning German Bundesliga top scorer, Robert Lewandowski, was just 15/8 (2.88) to be First Goalscorer in Bayern Munich’s first game of the season on Friday night…

While his team cruised to a bruising 8-0 (EIGHT-nil) victory over Schalke, Lewandowski had to wait until a penalty came his way, with the score already at 2-0.

Serge Gnabry opened the scoring, and went on to bag a hat-trick. Short-price, Lewandowski favourite-backers went home empty handed.

Plenty of entertainment…

That’s all from me for a few days. I’ll be back with plenty of articles, analysis & advice for you, next week.

This week, why not have an explore of our website. We’ve got at-a-glance betting stats for 17 leagues on there, covering over 300 teams, and over 150 games a week.

The site also contains all our emails, in the Email Archive section of the Picks & Analysis tab. You’ll see recent articles in there containing all our ante post 2020/21 selections, so far (such as 100/1 Mitrovic and 100/1 Dykes).

And if you fancy doing some midweek upset-hunting in the 3rd round of the Carabao Cup, then you can take some encouragement from this little nugget that I’ll leave you with…

  • At this stage of the competition last season, Premier League clubs Tottenham, West Ham, Sheffield United, and Bournemouth were all knocked out. And Manchester United and Wolves were both taken to penalty shootouts

David v Goliath ties coming up this week in the Carabao Cup include:

Luton v Man Utd, Leyton Orient v Tottenham, Fleetwood v Everton, Lincoln v Liverpool, and Morecambe v Newcastle…

The acca on those five Premier League clubs all To Qualify for the next round pays just 5/4 (2.25). No Thanks. We’ll be going for big prices and exciting underdogs, all season long.

Have a good week. And enjoy the football…

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
