Champions League tonight - including Atletico v Chelsea...

Tuesday 23rd February 2021

In Across the Leagues today:

  • Blackpool in form…
  • Lazio v Bayern Munich, 8pm…
  • Atletico Madrid v Chelsea, 8pm…

Champions League tonight – including Atletico v Chelsea…

If Crystal Palace could always score goals with the ruthless efficiency that they did last night, then they’d be challenging for honours…

Playing without their star man Wilfried Zaha, Palace silenced the ‘one-man team’ critics with an important 2-1 win at M23 rivals, Brighton.

The match stats make eye-catching reading. Brighton had a whopping 74% of Possession. And the home team did more of pretty much everything – Shots, Corners, Crosses. But Palace out-scored them… finding the net with their only 2 Shots on Target.

It was a similar story in their 1-1 draw at Selhurst Park earlier in the season. With the London side once again scoring with their only meaningful shot on goal.

Brighton hammered the corners last night, 13-0. Covering the -3 Corner Handicap with loads of room to spare. Just as they did in recent fixtures at the Amex Stadium against Fulham (10-0), Tottenham (9-2), and Villa (9-2).

  • The Premier League stats on our website show that Brighton have now won the Most Corners in 12 out of 13 home games (92%)

I’ve got two more promising Corners match-ups for us tonight, in the Champions League. See below.

EFL Scorers notebook…

The Scorers tables are some of my favourite pages on the Across the Leagues website.

With a busy midweek programme of EFL action across the Championship, League One, and League Two starting this evening – here are five men to look out for in the First Goalscorer and/ or Anytime Scorer markets…

These guys are all flying high in the Top 5 spots in the Top Goalscorer charts in their respective divisions:

  • Teemu Pukki (Norwich – Championship) – the Canaries’ Finnish forward has scored 4 goals in his last 3 games. Including one penalty, and First Goalscorer payouts in his last 2 appearances
  • Mallik Wilks (Hull – League One) – Wilks has banged in 5 goals in his last 2 game, with a hat-trick followed by a brace. When Hull went to tonight’s opponents Ipswich earlier this season, Wilks opened the scoring after just 2 minutes
  • Jonson Clarke-Harris (Peterborough – League One) – Clarke-Harris has produced more Anytime Scorer payouts that any player in League One this season, with 14 from 28 games. He’s currently on a 5-game scoring run in all competitions
  • Charlie Wyke (Sunderland – League One) – 5 goals in his last 2 games have propelled Wyke to joint-top of the League One Top Goalscorer standings, level with Clarke-Harris on 18 goals. Wyke has landed Anytime Scorer bets in 7 of his last 9 outings in all comps
  • Paul Mullin (Cambridge – League Two) – Mullin is the runaway top scorer in League Two with 22 goals, 6 ahead of his nearest rival. He’s scored in 3 of his last 4 games

All five of those guys scored last Saturday. If you like the sound of those stats and fancy following the form men in tonight’s games, all five are available at around Evens (2.0) to 6/4 (2.5) each to score Anytime.

Blackpool in form…

Another player to score in League One last weekend was Jerry Yates

Part of my 2020/21 ante post preview for this division, 33/1 Yates is a little off the pace being set by Charlie Wyke & co, currently five goals off the Top 4, Each Way places.

The 24-year-old got the only goal of the game in Blackpool’s 1-0 win at promotion favourites Portsmouth on Saturday, though. And Yates has now found the net in 5 of his last 10 league games, and in 5 out of 8 in all comps.

His Blackpool side are one of the form teams in the division right now, winning 4 of their last 5 games…

The Tangerines were my 20/1 Each Way (3 places) pick for the League One title at the start of the season. A slow start has seen that price drift out considerably. But the way this League One table is looking, a strong run-in between now and the end of the campaign could yet see Neil Critchley’s side do us proud…

League One table (as of 22nd Feb):

League One Table

14/1 for Promotion…

A place in the Top 6 and qualification for the Playoffs isn’t too far off for Blackpool. They have games in hand over all 12 teams above them in the table. Including at least two games in hand on three of the four teams currently residing in the Playoff positions.

One of those are Doncaster Rovers, who travel to Bloomfield Road to take on our boys this evening. What I like about Blackpool’s form this season is that they’ve done well against the fancied teams in this division:

Last weekend’s 1-0 win at Portsmouth completed the home & away double over Pompey. And the Seasiders have also beaten the likes of Peterborough away, drawn 0-0 v Oxford, won and drawn with Hull, and drawn 0-0 at Accrington.

As well as leading scorer Yates up front; at the back, Blackpool usually keep it tight. Only four sides have kept more Clean Sheets. Nine of their 12 wins have been To Nil – including half a dozen 1-0 victories.

A good result tonight v Doncaster today, and / or at Charlton this Saturday, could see Blackpool’s price for Promotion cut. From 6/1 at the start of the 2020/21 campaign, they are today available at a standout 14/1 and 12/1 to go up.

  • In League Two, we’ve got Morecambe in the book at 50/1 Each Way for the title, and 9/1 for Promotion. After a 2-1 away win at Barrow last weekend, the Shrimps are 4th. They’re at home v 5th place Salford today

Champions League Corners…

In tonight’s Champions League Last 16, 1st Leg ties, my research pinpoints two opportunities in the Corners stats:

Lazio v Bayern Munich
8pm – BT Sport

Lazio have won the Most Corners in less than half of their Serie A games this season (48%). And in just 7 out of 15 home games across the Italian league and the Champions League combined.

Bayern Munich have won the Most Corners in 13 games in a row in all comps. The Bundesliga stats on our site show the German champions have won the Most Corners in a league-best 82% of games, including 9 out of 12 away.

Having watching him play several times, I can say that Munich’s pacey attacker Kingsley Coman’s endeavours can be worth a handful of corner kicks on their own…

  • Bayern -2 Corner Handicap bets have paid out in 10 of their last 13 games

Atletico Madrid v Chelsea
8pm – BT Sport

Atletico are not actually at ‘home’ here, with the 1st Leg being played in Bucharest, Romania, due to coronavirus travel restrictions.

The Spanish league leaders are in the bottom half of La Liga when it comes to Most Corners payouts, with just 9 ‘corners wins’ in 23 league games this season (39%).

Chelsea are ranked 3rd in the Premier League for Most Corners.

  • Since Thomas Tuchel took over at Chelsea, the Blues have won the Most Corners in 6 out of 7 games – with the only ‘corners loss’ coming away in the FA Cup, where Tuchel didn’t field a full-strength team
