Get set for the FA Cup…

Happy New Year…

There’s not much to cheer about in the world right now. But elite sport has been given the green light to continue in the new lockdown. The football can continue to keep you & I entertained in the weeks and months to come…

My own picks took a bit of a kicking with fixture postponements over Christmas. Frozen and waterlogged pitches wiping out a few of the highlighted English Football League games. And coronavirus of course seeing several others called off at late notice.

Our Across the Leagues members-only website continues to pile up the form and stats, and it’s been great to hear from those of you that are doing well by using the site to pick out your own bets and winners…

Paul writes in with a wise message: ‘Don’t bet on things you don’t know anything about!’

“I had a reasonable football betting weekend, thanks to a Premier League treble from you and my own treble from your data, Bayern over 2.5 goals, plus Milan & Juve double chance.

However I also bet on the Darts Final, what a waste of money, I know heehaw (nothing) about darts and lost. It did dent the surplus but overall I was up. Cheers”

Cheers, Paul. I can respectively tell you that the PDC darts final was won by Gerwyn Price, who was a 5/1 shot pre-tournament. And that 33/1 Gary Anderson was runner-up. Like you, though, I stick to the football…

In the notebook…

The New Year got me in a slightly reflective mood, and I took a trawl back through my Anytime Scorer records. Since the start of the current 2020/21 season, my selections in that department are showing a 36% ROI to level stakes. That’s a market I’ll be continuing to plunder and pay attention to.

  • Our website has Anytime, First Goalscorer, and Last Goalscorer stats for 17 different leagues. Check out the stats at: www.AcrossTheLeagues.co.uk

Scottish Premiership top scorer James Tavernier might not have scored in the Old Firm derby last week. But the historical discipline research proved useful, with Rangers 1 Celtic 0 producing a Red Card for the 5th time in their last 7 meetings.

Rangers’ hot-headed striker Alfredo Morelos was in the cards yet again, too. Picking up a Yellow. He’s now been carded in 6 of his last 8 starts v Celtic.

Sticking with the Scorers theme, Darwin Nunez is a player we’ve been keeping tabs on this season. The 21-year-old Uruguayan only joined Benfica this season, but he’s already being touted for a big-money transfer elsewhere…

  • Nunez has landed Anytime Scorer bets in 6 of his last 12 appearances for Benfica. In their last 2 games, over Christmas & New Year, he’s scored the First Goal on both occasions

We’re still waiting for the next Half Time/ Full Time turnaround in the Premier League. In the Bundesliga, German champions Bayern Munich produced one of those 25/1 comebacks at the weekend. Coming from 0-2 down at half time v Mainz, to roar back and win 5-2.

With such fancy odds available, the Half Time/ Full Time market is one we’ll continue to monitor, too.

The magic of the Cup…

This evening it’s Tottenham v Brentford in the Carabao Cup (League Cup) semi finals. Followed by Man Utd v Man City tomorrow. Both games are live on Sky Sports.

I’m directing my energies this week to the FA Cup. I’ve got several seasons’ worth of underdog-hunting notes in my records, and I’ll be writing that all up in my FA Cup Outright Winner analysis for you on Thursday.

I’ll be going for a couple of outsiders in the Each Way betting. As well as taking a look at ‘potential banana skins’ for the weekend’s 3rd round ties.

See you on Thursday for an FA Cup special edition.

Enjoy the football…

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
