In Across the Leagues today:
At various times throughout the year, 2020 has ‘got to me.’ I’m sure it’s the same for you.
In terms of the football that we love, 100 straight days without the Premier League was a surreal and barren time that hopefully we won’t see the likes of again.
But we made it through. And here we are, in the thick of the 2020/21 season, with stacks of football to enjoy and look forward to.
The initial devastating blow of the coronavirus pandemic saw all the major leagues suspended in March. In May, the German Bundesliga was the first league to get back playing, behind closed doors…
And the Germans are also the first to sign off for 2020, with the Bundesliga now on a Christmas break until the first week of January.
Elsewhere though, the festive fixture list is overflowing…
In the UK, the Premier League, English Football League (EFL), and Scottish Premiership all have a very busy Christmas & New Year calendar.
For example, in the Scottish Premiership, there’s a full round of games tomorrow evening (Wednesday). Followed by the full Boxing Day schedule on Saturday, then midweek on Wednesday 30th December, and again on Saturday 2nd January for New Year’s.
Tomorrow night also sees a full programme in Italy, with Serie A signing off for Christmas. And it’s the same in France, with Ligue 1 matches on Wednesday, then returning on 6th Jan.
Spain also has midweek games, across today & tomorrow. With La Liga action then continuing with the matches kicking-off on 29th Dec, and then 2nd Jan.
My main concentration over the next week or so will be on the UK-based action. Today I’m looking at Cards & Booking stats in the Premier League (see below). Tomorrow I’ll be sharing my Win & Both Teams to Score contenders in the EFL.
In recent weeks my analysis has featured markets such as Half Time/ Full Time, Anytime Scorers, and Win & Both Teams to Score.
We’ve also taken a look at the top-performing teams in the Premier League for Most Corners bets. With Aston Villa and Brighton identified as the league leaders in that category, as displayed on our website, and reported in yesterday’s email.
Today we’re focusing on the Cards & Booking Points stats in the English top-flight…
If you’re new to Cards & Booking Points betting, or just need a refresher on the markets associated to the disciplinary stats. The Betting Guide page on our site is a great place to start.
Here’s one of the key things from that guide. Most bookmakers use the same 'points' system for Bookings:
Alternatively, Bet365 bet on 'Cards' – using the following distinction:
Now, let’s take a look at the top runners & riders for the 2020/21 Premier League season so far…
In terms of who’s naughty or nice this Christmas, then our Under/ Over 3.5 Cards, and Most Booking Points charts, will come in very handy.
We’ll start with the good boys…
In terms of providing payouts for Under 3.5 Cards or Under 35.5/ Under 40 Booking Points, Leeds and Burnley have been the teams to follow for producing the best-behaved games.
The Premier League Totals page on our site tells us that Liverpool have got the fewest Yellow Cards overall (10).
The Totals tables also show that Newcastle have committed fewer Fouls than any team in the division (134).
Liverpool are also the best-behaved side when it comes to getting the Most Bookings Points in games. Landing that ‘Most Cards’ bet in just one of their 14 Premier League games so far this season.
Tottenham are next best, receiving the Most Bookings in just 3 of their 14 matches.
Betting on something to happen can be a more exciting pursuit then backing an outcome not to happen…
That’s been in evidence recently. From the emails I’ve received regarding your Win & Both Teams to Score selections, cheering for goals to go in all over the park is a more enjoyable way to watch Jeff Stelling and the boys on Soccer Saturday, than holding out for a Clean Sheet or No Goals.
In regards to the disciplinary markets, that joy can come from seeing your Player to be Carded selection fly into a tackle and collect a booking, or even get sent off for an early bath.
In the Total Cards & Booking Points options, that can mean cheering every foul, and berating the ref to get his cards out…
Here are the teams that have been involved in the highest number of ‘dirty’ games in the Premier League this season:
Arsenal are leading the way for Over 3.5 Cards and 40+ Booking Points bets.
The Gunners are also joint-top for Total number of Red Cards. With three Arsenal players Sent Off so far, level with Brighton and West Brom.
Our Totals charts also show that Fulham have committed the most Fouls in the Premier League (179).
Leicester have received the most Yellow Cards overall (30).
When it comes to the worst-behaved side, for Most Bookings payouts, Fulham are joint-top, alongside Sheffield United.
With Burnley and Brighton also posting some noteworthy home strike-rates for that bet:
