The Champions League kicks off this evening. With a hint of autumn in the air, the nights will soon be drawing in – and we’ll be settling in for the real meat & bones of the football season. Week in, week out, including stacks of midweek action.

With the formbook now starting to fill up, I’ve got lots of stats and info coming up for you this week. Starting this afternoon with the latest addition to our 2022/23 big-odds, ante-post book…

Today we’re taking a similarly large-odds roll at this season’s three UEFA cup competitions…

Champions League: MANCHESTER CITY @ 5/2

Premier League champions Man City have signed Norwegian goal-machine Erling Braut Haaland for one primary reason: to try and finally win the Champions League. It’s easy to get carried away with a favourite, and anything can happen in cup football, of course. But from where I’m standing, it’s hard not to see Haaland & co staging a serious assault on this competition this season.

And in a combo with UEFA’s other two club tournaments, City at 2/1+ helps snowball the odds nicely…

Europa League: ROMA @ 14/1

Roma were a winning leg in our massive European cup acca last season, with Jose Mourinho guiding the Italian club to some much-needed silverware. Taking the inaugural Conference League, in his first season in charge. Mourinho is a serial winner, and will need little motivation to get his team up and ready for the next cup in the UEFA pecking order, the Europa League. New signing Paulo Dybala is a top-class attacking addition to this Roma team. Premier League sides Arsenal and Man Utd are the favourites at around 6/1 each. Roma at 14/1 and 12/1 could prove better value.

Europa Conference League: VILLARREAL @ 7/1

Last season’s surprise Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal can frank their European pedigree here, and deliver on 6/1+ odds in the Conference League. The Yellow Submarine have started the new season in fine form, winning five out of six games in all competitions, and sitting just two points off the top of the table in La Liga. Manager Unai Emery is a UEFA cup specialist, having won the Europa League three seasons in a row with Sevilla – and then a record fourth time in 2020/21, with Villarreal.

You can play those three selections any which way you choose, of course. Unlike with our English league combo, where we played Each Way with the top three places in the table up for grabs, and also took the individual teams as singles at the top prices. I’m proposing this 300/1+ UEFA cup acca as a small-stakes win-only Trixie bet, splitting a stake four ways across three doubles, and the big-odds treble. If these three sides get to the business end of their respective competitions, we’ll have a large ticket in the pocket…
