Weekend Preview – 4 men to get back on the horse…

Thursday’s Europa League action didn’t quite produce the spectacular goal splurge that we were looking for. The 2nd Legs produced a total of 43 goals across the 16 matches, compared to a record haul of 59 in last week’s 1st Leg encounters.

From my four featured games, Rangers v Royal Antwerp ended up being the highest-scoring tie of the entire evening. With Steven Gerrard’s men racking up a goal-filled 5-2 win. That Correct Score was 100/1.

  • 5 of Rangers’ 11 Europa League games this season have gone Over 3.5 Goals

Rangers’ home score-lines have been a high-or-low lucky dip over the last couple of months. Since the start of December, the Ibrox club have won nine out of nine home games in all competitions. With two contrasting styles of victory:

  • High-scoring 3-2, 3-1, 5-0, 4-1, and 5-2 wins
  • Alongside 4 x 1-0 Correct Scores

What will come next – another goal-fest, or a 1-0 grind? We’ll find out next Wednesday, when Rangers go to Livingston in the Scottish Premiership.

A rich source of stats…

Your members-only Across the Leagues website is a rich source of stats and trends, all geared to the betting markets…

We’ve got 17 leagues covered on there. Taking in over 300 teams. And over 3,000 players – with each team’s Scorers and Yellow Card merchants listed on the Team Stats pages. Go to:

In recent emails I’ve looked at Cards and Corners. Those are two areas likely to feature in my analysis next week, including the midweek Premier League and English Football League schedule.

This weekend, my personal slant on the stats is to target four Scorers in the top leagues. Proven goal-scoring men, on the slightest of ‘droughts’ right now. My thinking being, the prices have drifted a little compared to previous pre-match prices on them this season. And these guys are expected to be back in the goals sooner rather than later…

Weghorst for Wolfsburg…

Wolfsburg v Hertha Berlin (Sat 2.30pm)

Wout Weghorst has had plenty of column inches from me over the past two campaigns…

The big Dutchman was a 50/1 Each Way pick for Bundesliga Top Goalscorer in 2019/20, finished on 16 goals, just one strike away from a share of the place money for a Top 3 finish (4th).

This season, the bookies went chicken in Germany – betting Win Only on the Bundesliga 2020/21 market, with no Each Way pickings available.

  • Weghorst is on course to beat last season’s tally, sitting at 14 league goals – with 12 rounds of games still to come. His Wolfsburg side are flying high, 3rd in the league

Wout is currently two games without a goal. Hardly a drought, I know. Since the delayed 2019/20 campaign was completed last summer, Weghorst has only once gone more than two matches without finding the net. He’s 21/20 (2.05) to get back to scoring ways at home v 15th place Hertha Berlin this weekend.

Here's the top of the Bundesliga Anytime Scorer chart from our website. In comparison to Evens+ for Weghorst, Lewandowski is just 1/4 (1.25) to score this weekend, and Haaland is also very short odds-on, at 1/3 (1.33). While Andre Silva is due back from injury for Frankfurt.

Bundesliga Scorers Stats...

Serie A heavyweights…

Two men that are very much on my radar to get back in the goals in Italy are Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Ciro Immobile

Roma v AC Milan (Sun 7.45pm)

  • Ibrahimovic is joint-3rd in the Serie A scoring charts this season. He’s 3 appearances in all comps without a goal, although one of those was from the subs’ bench. When in the starting line-up, his league record for AC Milan this season reads 8 Anytime Scorer payouts out of 12

Bologna v Lazio (Sat 5pm)

  • Immobile was top scorer in the Italian top-flight last season, and is not far off again this term. The Lazio man is on 14 goals, level with Zlatan. Immobile is 3 games in all comps without a goal. You have to go back to December 2019 for the last time he went longer than that without hitting the back of the net

As with Weghorst, those two can be backed at Evens (2.0) or better this weekend. And as with the Bundesliga’s top men, the other Serie A big guns are at shorter prices. Romelu Lukaku is odds-on at 8/15 (1.53) to score for Inter Milan, and Cristiano Ronaldo is 4/6 (1.67) for Juventus.

Vardy has previous…

Last but not least, Leicester forward Jamie Vardy has a fantastic record against the Big Six clubs in the Premier League. Including this weekend’s opponents…

Leicester v Arsenal (Sun 12 noon – BT Sport)

Since returning from injury, Vardy has started each of Leicester’s last four games in all comps, and played the full 90 minutes. Since scoring against Liverpool in the league, he’s three games without a goal.

Jamie has already breached the defences of Liverpool, Arsenal, Tottenham, and Man City this season. Building on an impressive Premier League career record against the big boys. For example:

  • Vardy has landed Anytime Scorer bet in 6 of his last 7 league appearances against Arsenal. Across those 7 games, he’s scored a total of 8 goals v the Gunners

Last season’s Premier League Golden Boot winner, Vardy is 11/8 (2.38) to rack up another big-game goal this weekend.
