Four goalscoring midfielders…

Lewis Ferguson had a good day yesterday…

The 21-year-old midfielder scored twice for Aberdeen in a 3-3 draw with champions Celtic. The young Scotsman landed the first & last goals of the game, including winning & converting a penalty in the first half.

Ferguson took home the Sky Sports Man of the Match award. And after yesterday’s brace of confidently-taken penalty kicks, Lewis now sits on his own at the top of the Scottish Premiership scorer charts…

  • Top stats: Ferguson has got 8 goals in 11 league appearances this season. In all competitions, he’s on 9 goals from his last 12 games
  • Fun fact: Lewis Ferguson is the nephew of former Rangers midfielder, Barry Ferguson

The Aberdeen man has been a very profitable pick for us so far in 2020/21. We’ve flagged him up twice at generous Anytime Scorer odds. First at 5/1 v St Mirren earlier this month, then again at 8/1 at the weekend v Celtic.

Put simply, if Lewis Ferguson had exactly the same scoring stats, but played as an out-and-out striker instead of in midfield, then we wouldn’t be getting odds of 5/1 and 8/1 about him.

Following a dynamic penalty-or-free-kick-taking, goalscoring midfielder like this can be a very successful betting tactic…

I’m reminded of the days of Frank Lampard for Chelsea & England, and Tim Cahill for Everton & Australia.

Three other midfielders with an eye for goal have appeared in our notes a few times recently – and they all found the net again at the weekend, too…

  • Andreas Gruber. After drawing a blank for us at outsider odds in the Europa League at Tottenham last week, 25-year-old Gruber was back in domestic business as the favourite for LASK Linz in the Austrian Bundesliga on Sunday. He got the first goal in a 4-0 win v St Polten. Gruber has got 4 goals in 8 games in all comps since signing for Linz this season
  • Dejan Kulusevski. Serie A champions Juventus have made a slow start to their league campaign, and star man Cristiano Ronaldo has missed the last few games. The 20-year-old Kulusevski has been a bright spark, though. He’s got a mean left foot – as she showed with the equaliser in a 1-1 draw v Verona last night
  • Ryan Christie. Back from having to self-isolate after a teammate tested positive for coronavirus, Christie was back on the scoresheet for Celtic in that 3-3 draw at Aberdeen (penalty). The 25-year-old Scotland International has scored in 6 of his last 16 appearances for club & country

Ferguson, Gruber, Kulusevski, and Christie will remain on our radar – with European cup fixtures coming up this week, and of course the continuing domestic calendar, too.

Italian goals continue…

We’ve been tracking the high-goals form in Italy, and Serie A continued to entertain over the weekend…

A 3-3 draw between Sassuolo and Torino wasn’t quite the score-line we were looking for, having backed Sassuolo to Win & Over 3.5 Goals. But we were in the right ballpark by going after a high-scoring outcome:

  • Sassuolo’s last four games have now ended: 3-3, 1-4, 4-1, 4-3
  • Torino’s last three score-lines have been: 3-3, 2-4, 2-3

Elsewhere in the Italian top-flight, four other fixtures burst the Over 3.5 Goals line at the weekend:

Atalanta 1 Sampdoria 4
Cagliari 4 Crotone 2
Parma 2 Spezia 2
Fiorentina 3 Udinese 2

Zlatan in action tonight…

Will we see more goals in Serie A tonight? AC Milan v Roma (7.45pm) sees the hosts looking to maintain their 100% start to the campaign, and win a fifth consecutive league game.

The oddsmakers have Milan at 23/20 (2.15) for the home win. Visitors Roma are on a three-match winning streak in all comps. The away win is 9/4 (3.25), with the draw at 13/5 (3.6).

Two veteran strikers might have a big say on the outcome this evening…

Our recent 9/2 (5.5) First Goalscorer winner Zlatan Ibrahimovic is around 3/1 (4.0) this time. The 39-year-old star has paid out in that market in six of his last eight starts for Milan.

For Roma, at 34 years of age, Edin Dzeko remains a big threat up front, too. He got a brace in Roma’s 5-2 league win v Benevento last weekend. Dzeko is around 11/2 (6.5) to score first here.

In the Anytime market, Zlatan is odds-on at 19/20 (1.95), with Dzeko a top price of 7/4 (2.75) with Betfred.
