Spotlight - Why you shouldn't trust Oddschecker...

Wednesday 13th April 2016

In your Prem10 – Spotlight email today:

  • Why you shouldn’t trust Oddschecker...
  • You need a Sat Nav...
  • And a road map...

Crystal Palace play Everton in a rearranged game-in-hand this evening.

And with a full set of betting markets available online for that game, now is a good time to tackle a subject that many of you have emailed in about this season:

Where to find bets on bookies’ websites...

You need a Sat Nav...

Finding a bet on a team to Win, Draw or Lose is easy.

But the bookies – and even the internet’s top odds comparison websites – can make life pretty tricky for us when it comes to the ‘alternative’ markets that we like to bet on here at Prem10.

Bets such as ‘Most Cards,’ for example...

Now, to me that’s a pretty simple proposition – a bet on which team will get the Most Cards in the game.

But for some reason the bookies and odds comparison sites feel the need to mess around with the name of that bet... hide it away... or sometimes ignore it completely.

It’s almost like the bookies don’t want you to find bets like Watford to get the Most Cards (a winning 13/10 value Pick for us last weekend)...

Back to tonight’s game for a case in point. On Oddschecker, there is only one page that matches up for this betting market and it’s called Most Bookings. Clicking on that gives you just one option – a bet with Bwin. And when you get to the Bwin site, that bet is actually called, ‘Which team will receive the most yellow cards’...

The plot thickens.

Having been doing this for near on a decade, I know for a fact that Bet365, William Hill, 888 Sport, Unibet, 32 Red, BetBright, MarathonBet and Betfair will ALL also be offering a version of this market.

With a variety of names – none of which are anywhere to be seen on Oddschecker.

Time to reach for the road map...

Technology Nil, good ol’ local knowledge 1...

In this instance it turns out having a working knowledge of the individual bookies, their websites and the names of the markets comes in a darn sight more useful than using some flashy middle-man website.

I’ve got nothing against odds comparison websites, but – just like a Sat Nav that loses its signal on a Cornish country road – they’re as much use as a chocolate kettle if they don’t show ALL the betting options.

So for the record, here’s what the Oddschecker ‘Most Bookings’ page SHOULD be displaying for tonight’s Crystal Palace v Everton match...

  • ‘0 (zero) Card Handicap’ Bet365
  • ‘Most Cards’888 Sport, Unibet, 32Red Sport
  • ‘Which team will receive the most yellow cards’ – Bwin
  • ‘Most Yellow Cards’ – MarathonBet
  • ‘Match Bookings’ – BetBright

And if the game was live on TV (like West Ham v Man Utd in the FA Cup tonight):

  • ‘Booking Match Bet’ – Betfair

That’s SEVEN options available for a version of the ‘Most Cards’ market – when Oddschecker is showing just one.

Proof indeed that it pays to shop around for your bets (and also that perhaps I spend a bit too much time on the internet)...

This is a topic I’ll be returning to in future emails.

And as usual I’ll include ‘Where to find this bet’ instructions in your Weekend Picks email on Friday – when I’ll be back, with my Sat Nav on the dashboard and my tattered old AA road map on the back seat. You can’t be too careful.

Until then – drive safely,

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
