Welcome to your Weekend Picks & Analysis email.
Every week I research the stats & fixtures, across the leagues. With the aim of identifying games with top-rated stats match-ups, bet opportunities and the best prices available with the bookies.
FA Cup weekend – but 8 games in the lower leagues...
Southampton have been a profitable Corner Handicap pick for us this season, but that wasn’t the case on Tuesday evening as they lost the corner count 4-7 v Crystal Palace. Saints were ahead on the corners early on, but after going a goal up they didn’t win a another corner kick until they were 2 goals to 1 down with just a few minutes remaining.
The first weekend of the New Year is traditionally reserved for the FA Cup 3rd Round, and this season is no exception – leaving us with just the 8 games to look at across League One and League Two, featuring teams already out of the Cup.
I’ve studied the stats, head-to-heads and latest prices and there are two opportunities in League One that standout for me – see below.

Go ‘Over’ at Oxford...
Oxford Utd v Blackpool
League One, Sat 3pm
- Over 2.5 Goals has paid out in 5 of Oxford’s last 6 Home games
Oxford games have seen plenty of goals recently. Including losing 7-0 (seven nil) to Wigan, 3-2 at Bradford and most recently winning 3-1 v MK Dons.
Saturday’s game looks a good match-up for more goals. Oxford v Blackpool is 6th v 5th on our League One ‘Over 2.5 Goals’ chart...
That bet has paid out in 10 of Oxford’s 13 games at the Kassam Stadium (77%), including 5 of their last 6.
Oxford Home games are averaging 3.6 Total Goals per game this season, and they’ve found the net at least once in all but one Home game (92% Scored In record).
As well as being ranked 5th for Over 2.5 Goals payouts, Blackpool are also 2nd in the division for Both Teams to Score.
Five of Blackpool’s last 7 games have gone Over 2.5 Goals, with a mixed bag including a 3-2 defeat, 2-2 draw and 2-1 win in their 3 most recent fixtures.
The reverse fixture at Blackpool earlier this season finished 3-1 and the stats and recent form say we could see 3+ goals again. The price looks good too, with the bookies making this option the slight outsider in the Under/ Over Total Goals market, at Evens+ (2.00+).
Over 2.5 Goals is a best price 103/100 (2.03) with Marathonbet, Evens (2.00) Bet365, Betfair Sportsbook, Paddy Power, Betfred, Stan James, BetVictor. |
Oldham No.1 for Both Teams to Score...
Charlton v Oldham
League One, Sat 3pm
- Both Teams to Score has paid out in 10 of Oldham’s 13 Away games
Oldham are ranked No.1 in League One for Both Teams to Score and have been a frontrunner on our chart for that bet for most of the season – especially in Away games where they have a 77% record with 10 payouts from 13 trips.
The Latics have managed to score in 10 of those Away games, but have kept just one Clean Sheet from 13.
Charlton won 4-3 at Oldham earlier this season, and on recent form they look a decent match-up for goals at both ends again...
Both Teams to Score bets have paid out in 4 of Charlton’s last 5 Home games. They’ve found the net in a very respectable 11 out of 13 league games at The Valley (85%) – but only kept 3 Clean Sheets.
Both Teams to Score is a best price 18/25 (1.72) with Marathonbet, Sportingbet, Bwin, 7/10 (1.70) Bet365, Ladbrokes, SunBets, Coral, Betway. |
I’ll be back on Monday with your Weekend Stats Review email, taking in the latest results & trends – with one eye on next week’s games.
Enjoy the football...
