In your Across the Leagues email today:
- Weekend Stats Review...
- Goal trends and old friends...
- Coming up this week – the Premier League...
Welcome to your first Weekend Stats Review email of the season.
Every Monday we’ll be taking a look at the latest stats and results – catching up on the performance of our Picks, and drawing attention to particularly eye-catching teams, players or trends.
The English Football League and Scottish Premiership got underway over the weekend. Obviously with just one game played, it’s too early to read much into the results. That said I’m always interested in trends that may continue and carry over from last season’s top performers.
Here are a few stats that made it into my notes this weekend...
Goal trends and old friends...
I’ll start with our weekend Pick. Norwich were our top-rated Championship side for Over 2.5 Goals last season (74% Away record), but their opening game of 2017/18 fell one goal short of the 3-goal target with a 1-1 draw at Fulham. Both those teams were also rated Top 3 in the division for Both Teams to Score last season – an own goal and an 88th minute equaliser kept up that trend for the time being.
Elsewhere, some of last season’s standout stats were on show again...
In the Championship:
- Aston Villa had a 72% overall record for Under 2.5 Goals last season – making them the No.1 team in the Championship in that market. Villa started the new campaign with new signing John Terry playing the full 90 minutes in a 1-1 draw with newly-relegated Hull
- Last season the Time of First Goal was After the 27th Minute in 74% of Nottingham Forest Home games. They were at it again in their 1-0 Home Win v Millwall on Friday night, with the only goal of the game coming in the 41st minute
In League One:
- Oldham were No.1 in the division for Under 2.5 Goals payouts (80%) last term and that pattern continued with a 0-2 opening day defeat to Oxford Utd
In League Two:
- In 2016/17 Wycombe had the best Home record in the division for Under 10.5 Corners bets (83%). There was a low corners tally again in their first game of 2017/18, with just 4 corners in a 2-2 draw at home v Lincoln
And in the brand new league that we’re covering with our unique betting stats this season, the Scottish Premiership:
- There were Under 3.5 Cards in 15 of Rangers’ 19 Away games (79%) in 2016/17. The Referee was fairly busy again on day one of the new campaign, showing a total of 6 Yellow Cards (or 60 Booking Points, as some bookies call it) in Rangers’ 2-1 Away Win at Motherwell
Coming up this week – the Premier League...
This weekend the Football League and Scottish Premiership continue with round two – along with of course the start of the 2017/18 Premier League season...
The action kicks off on Friday night with Arsenal v Leicester on Sky Sports. In total, five of the weekend’s 10 Premier League fixtures are live on TV.
I’ll be looking at the Premier League – and all the fixtures, across the leagues – in my research for your Weekend Picks & Analysis email on Friday. It’s early days to be having too many selections, but the bookies might serve up a decent price or two for us.
Before then, I’ll be back in touch on Wednesday with your first Spotlight email of the season. As seems appropriate, we’ll be paying special attention to some standout Premier League stats & angles in that feature.
See you on Wednesday...
Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
