Watford beat Tottenham 2-1 on Sunday. That result puts them joint top of the Premier League with Liverpool and Chelsea, with all three sides having won all 4 of their games.
The first thing I saw ‘trending’ on Oddschecker this morning was Watford to win the Premier League (500/1). As I write, odds of 66/1 for a Watford Top 4 Finish are also appearing on the current list of most popular Football bets.
Let’s not get carried away.
Overreactions are a classic betting error.
No disrespect to Watford, but this early-season, table-topping winning streak is one trend that I’d be surprised to see continue on throughout the campaign.
There are however plenty of other, less high-profile trends that could prove profitable as the games continue to flow…
Sheffield United, for example, are 100% for Over 2.5 Goals payouts (6 games out of 6) in the Championship. Saturday’s 4-1 win over Aston Villa landed our Goals pick before half time – and at a decent price too, with Over 2.5 priced up as the 6/5 (2.20) underdog in the Total Goals market.
Our other weekend Over 2.5 Goals pick was one goal short of the win, with 10-man Sunderland drawing 1-1 with Oxford United in a game defined by an early Red Card and a further 8 Yellow Cards.
Talking of Cards, West Ham are now 4 out of 4 for Most Cards and Most Booking Points bets. They were an 11/8 (2.38) weekend winner for us, picking up 2 Yellow Cards (20 pts) to just the one Yellow for Wolves (10 pts). West Ham are the only Premier League team with that 100% record, and also the only top-flight side to have lost all 4 of their games.
All told then a profitable weekend for the picks. For the new season overall we’re break-even so far with 6 winners from 12. We’ll be looking to step things up with more form in the book from this month on – and the start of the Champions League is only a fortnight away, too.
