Stats Review…

Liverpool’s 1-0 victory at Brighton was what the pundits call ‘the kind of win you need if you’re going to win the league’…

In other words that means not playing your best but still getting the 3 points. Keeping a Clean Sheet helps, too. And with the only goal of the game from the penalty spot (Mo Salah), there was only a small margin of victory on the day – but this was perhaps a massive win in terms of the title race.
The 1-0 Correct Score is a staple of the title run-in. From the days of 1-0 to the Arsenal under George Graham, to Leicester’s run of four consecutive 1-0 victories from March to April in 2016. The one-goal victory is something to look out for as Easter and ‘squeaky bum time’ approaches.

Here’s another statistic that catches the eye. There were no Cards or Bookings in that Brighton-Liverpool game…

In the Premier League standings on our website, the Reds are the No.1 team for Under 3.5 Cards results (77%). They have the lowest Most Booking Points For record – getting the most Cards/ Bookings in just 4 of their 22 games so far (18%). And on the Totals stats, Liverpool have received just 20 Yellow Cards, the fewest of any side in the Premier League.

This Fair Play record under Jurgen Klopp has been developing over the last couple of seasons. As the 2017/18 and 2016/17 stats on our site show, in terms of getting the Most Cards/ Bookings, Liverpool have been one of the three best-behaved sides in each of the two previous seasons.

We’ll be keeping a check on those Liverpool trends in the games and weeks to come.

Elsewhere in the weekend stats…

There’s a first time for everything, and two of the strongest stats runs of the season came to an end at the weekend – unfortunately in the exact two games where I picked them. Arsenal failed to score for the first time in 11 Away games this season. The 1-0 defeat at West Ham put a stopper on the recent Over 2.5 Goals form. And in League Two, Forest Green’s run of 13 out of 13 Away Both Teams to Score results came to a halt with a 0-0 at Oldham.

Both Teams to Score paid out again at the Hawthorns, though. Norwich came from behind for the 4th time in 8 games, to grab a 1-1 draw at fellow Championship title rivals West Brom. Both Teams to Score was our stats pick there, and that bet has now paid out in 9 of both club’s last 11 league games.

Coming up…

Man City play Wolves tonight (8pm, Sky Sports). The midweek football sees a smattering of FA Cup 3rd Round replays. We’ll have some midweek Picks & Analysis next week, with the Scottish Premiership returning from its winter break on Wednesday 23rd.

And before then, I’ll be back this Friday with your weekend email and standout stats.

Enjoy the football.

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
