FA Cup - Chelsea v Man Utd at 12/1...

Friday 15th February 2019

In your Across the Leagues EXTRA email today:

  • FA Cup this weekend…
  • Chelsea v Man Utd…
  • 12/1 each for Penalties…

Chelsea v Man Utd at 12/1…

The FA Cup 5th Round takes place this weekend, kicking off tonight with QPR v Watford and culminating on Monday evening with Chelsea v Man Utd.

With no Premier League this weekend, I’m taking a look at something a bit different to our usual standout stats & score predictions…

Chelsea v Man Utd

FA Cup
Monday, 7.30pm – BBC One

Match odds: Chelsea 11/10 (2.10), Draw 13/5 (3.60), Man Utd 13/5 (3.60)

To Qualify: Chelsea 8/13 (1.62), Man Utd 11/8 (2.38)

Man Utd have only lost once in 12 games under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. But with that defeat being the most recent – 0-2 v French champions PSG on Tuesday – and Anthony Martial and Jesse Lingard going off injured, the bookies are making the Red Devils underdogs here.

Home advantage plays a part, too. While Chelsea have flattered to deceive under Maurizio Sarri – losing 6-0 at Man City and 4-0 at Bournemouth recently – the Blues have remained strong at home. Chelsea have only been beaten once in 21 games in all competitions at Stamford Bridge this season (0-1 v Leicester in December).

These sides drew 2-2 at the Bridge in the league earlier this season. And all three of last season’s encounters were settled by a single goal, including Eden Hazard’s penalty kick being the only goal of the game in a 1-0 victory for Chelsea in the FA Cup final.

Rather than take one of the Win-Draw-Lose prices in the standard Match Result betting, the Method of Victory market could prove a fruitful angle for finding a nice big price here…

There are no replays in the 5th Round anymore, so this tie will be decided on Monday night – be it in 90 Minutes, Extra Time or on Penalties.

With a close and competitive Cup match in prospect, odds of 12/1 for each side to Win on Penalties catch the eye. Those odds are certainly more attractive than the Draw. And it’s never much of a stretch for a Cup tie stalemate to drift through Extra Time, and need Penalties to settle it…

Not many bookies have got involved with those options as I write, but that might change over the weekend. Bet365 have the best prices, with 12/1 available for each team. Boylesports also have the Method of Victory market, with Chelsea on Pens 10/1 and Man Utd 11/1.

I’ll be back next week with stats & predictions ready for when the Premier League returns. Plus, I’ll have some very exciting football news for you – more on that next week.

Enjoy the football…

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
