Summer Stats - Women’s World Cup...
Our new ‘Summer Stats Picks’ feature got off to a winning start last week....
England beat Argentina 1-0 on Friday night, eventually getting the job done to justify pre-match odds of just 1/12 (1.08). We concentrated on the Corners stats, backing England -6 Corner Handicap for a 13/10 (2.30) payout.
That result confirms the Women’s World Cup trend we identified last week: a strong correlation between teams being short odds-on favourites to win the match – and then winning the Most Corners by a large margin.
Here are some of the match results and corners tallies since our last email (match favourites in CAPS):
ENGLAND 1 Argentina 0
Corners = 7-0
CANADA 2 New Zealand 0
Corners = 8-1
SWEDEN 5 Thailand 1
Corners = 6-0
USA 3 Chile 0
Corners = 15-1
Nigeria 0 FRANCE 1
Corners = 2-9
Jamaica 1 AUSTRALIA 4
Corners = 1-8
Those results also continue to show that the stronger nations aren’t always winning games by many goals, but are bossing the corners by some substantial margins. Both England games have fitted that trend so far with a 2-1 win v Scotland (9-2 corners) and a 1-0 victory over Argentina (7-0 corners). That’s a 7-corner margin in both games for the Three Lionesses.
It might be a different story for England Women tonight though. Phil Neville’s side are already qualified for the Knockout Phase. A draw or win v Japan would put them through as Group D winners. However, Japan are a tougher prospect than Scotland and Argentina, a fact reflected in the Match Results and Most Corners prices today:
Match odds: England 23/20 (2.15), Draw 21/10 (3.10), Japan 13/5 (3.60)
Most Corners odds: England 1/2 (1.50), Japan 5/2 (3.50)
Corner Handicap: England -1, Japan +1
No bet for us today. But there may well be another corners pick for us in the next few days. The Group games get wrapped up this week, with the Knockouts starting at the weekend...
Best wishes,

Shaun Humphris
