Stats Review…

Going into the last 10 minutes of Saturday’s see-saw 4-3 win over Crystal Palace, Liverpool were on course to rack up a ‘No Cards’ score. Two Yellow Cards in seven minutes for James Milner put pay to that – and to the Palace Most Bookings pick.

Our other two stats picks went to form, with a 1-1 draw v Millwall giving yet Under 2.5 Goals result at the Riverside for Middlesbrough. And Doncaster Rovers racked up their 8th successive Over 2.5 Goals payout with a 2-2 draw v Burton Albion.

Tony Pulis has produced low-goals football wherever he’s been. His Middlesbrough side are in 1st place on the Championship standings on our website for Under 2.5 Goals, including 12 out of 14 Home games (86%).

Despite Milner’s sending off, Liverpool are still top of our stats as the best-behaved team in the Premier League. They have the top record for Under 3.5 Cards games (74%). No other top-flight team has fewer than their 5 Most Bookings results (from 23 games played). And with just 21 Yellow Cards overall, Liverpool have the lowest season total, with Man City next best with 28 Yellows.

And to be fair to James Milner…

As my colleague and Across the Leagues collaborator Shaun Humphris put it – I wouldn’t fancy marking Wilfried Zaha, either. Good point. Both Milner Yellow Cards were for tackles on the tricky Palace winger.

Shaun knows his football. With his knowledge of 80s classic kits and obscure foreign signings from the 90s, he comes in useful for the Sports round in pub quizzes. And on a more serious note – Shaun loves the stats. As I said before Christmas, you’ll be seeing Shaun in your Across the Leagues emails from now on.

Top trends online…

All the latest stats are available to view on your members-only website, updated after every round of games.

Standout stats showing right now include:

  • Man Utd are the form team in the Premier League, with a 2-1 win over Brighton making it 6 league wins in a row since Ole Gunnar Solskjaer took over. And United are rated No.1 for Over 2.5 Goals bets and also for Both Teams to Score, with matching 78% strike-rates
  • Sheffield United lost 1-0 at Swansea. The Blades won the Most Corners in that game, 7-3, and stay in 1st place in the Championship for that bet – including a 79% Away record
  • Sunderland drew 1-1 at Scunthorpe, maintaining their position as the No.1 team in League One for Both Teams to Score bets (75%)
  • MK Dons suffered a 0-1 defeat v Crewe, in a game featuring 15 Total Corners. MK Dons are the top-ranked League Two side for Over 10.5 Corners bets, including 11 out of 14 Home games (79%)

Scotland on Wednesday…

Shaun & I will be back on Wednesday, when the Scottish Premiership returns from the winter break. Top of the agenda will be the low corners stats for the games being played on synthetic pitches…

Enjoy the football.

Best wishes,

Oliver Upstone
