Picks & Analysis - Championship games tonight...

Wednesday 22nd August 2018

In your Across the Leagues email today:

  • Picks & Analysis – Championship tonight…
  • Stoke v Wigan...
  • Coming up this weekend...

100% start for Pompey and Posh...

After two late winning goals last night, Portsmouth and Peterborough are the only teams in the Football League that can boast a 100% start to the season. Both have played 4 and won 4 in League One.

Posh got their win with an 89th minute penalty at Charlton. Pompey grabbed a 2-1 win at Bristol Rovers with the decisive goal coming in the 87th minute.

Talking of 100% trends, Bristol Rovers have got one of their own. Both Teams to Score was our pick in that game, and that bet has now paid out in 14 out of 14 Rovers Home games in all comps this calendar year.

After a false start with our opening Premier League picks, last night’s results gave us our first winners of the season. Along with that Both Teams to Score selection, the stats also led us to Over 2.5 Goals for Crawley v Swindon in League Two. The game ended 2-2, and Over 2.5 Goals has now paid out in 100% of Swindon league games this season (4 out of 4).

Midweek Picks & Analysis…

This evening the midweek fixture list continues with six games in the Championship and two in League One.

As I mentioned yesterday, this season there are more opportunities than ever to watch games live on TV and online. Sky Sports have Aston Villa v Brentford tonight, with each of the five other Championship games available Interactive on the red button.

Along with the Football League’s iFollow service, where you can now purchase match passes to watch most individual club games online, right now there are more options than ever for armchair fans and bettors alike.

More live games means more betting markets...

Take Aston Villa v Brentford tonight, for example. As I write, there are multiple bookies offering Total Corners markets.

William Hill have 262 markets available for that game, Bet365 have 125 – just the same as for a Premier League match. Including Total Booking Points/ Cards, Most Booking Points/ Card Handicap, Total Corners, Most Corners/ Corners Match Bet and Corner Handicaps.

With our website containing unique betting stats for over 100 teams across the Premier League, Football League and Scottish Premiership – covering areas including Goals, Players, Corners, Cards & Booking Points – we’ve got all we need to go into battle, every week.

Here’s my take on today’s stats, prices and opportunities:

Stoke v Wigan

Championship
Tonight, 8pm – Sky Sports Interactive

Match odds: Stoke 23/20 (2.15), Draw 5/2 (3.50), Wigan 5/2 (3.50)

Last season, Stoke were playing in the Premier League and Wigan were in League One. The Match Result prices favour the Home team this evening, but so far Wigan have got twice as many Championship points as the Potters (Stoke 2 pts, Wigan 4 pts).

With 3 games each played, the main stats theme has been Goals...

All 3 Stoke games have seen goals at both ends, with a 3-1 defeat (A), 1-1 draw (H) and 2-2 draw (A). Last season in the Premier League, only three teams had a higher Home Over 2.5 Goals strike-rate than Stoke (63%). They’ve managed just one Clean Sheet in 12 competitive games going back to March.

Wigan have kicked off with a total of 18 goals in their opening 4 games of 2018/19 in all comps. That includes a 3-2 win (H), 3-2 defeat (A) and a 2-2 draw (H) in the Championship. Last season in League One, the Latics had the joint-highest Away Over 2.5 Goals record (61%).

As with Crawley v Swindon last night, the bookies’ prices make this game just about 50-50 in the Total Goals market – but the stats make a clear case for Over 2.5 Goals.

  • Over 2.5 Goals @ 10/11 (1.91) with Paddy Power, Betfair Sportsbook, Betfred, Marathonbet, 188Bet
