‘Next Goal Wins’ has a 100% rating...
With no live football on for us to enjoy at the moment, one way I’m getting my football fix is to turn to the internet. There’s a huge range of sports films and documentaries available…
Seeing as we’re likely to be in lockdown for a while yet, I thought I’d look up some evening viewing options to help pass the time. And maybe learn a thing or two about the beautiful game, too.
Film and TV buffs will be familiar with the Rotten Tomatoes website. Movies and shows are given a score based on critic reviews and audience opinions.
Ever one for facts & figures, I’ve looked up the top-ranked Sports movies on the site…
A 2014 documentary called Next Goal Wins is the highest-placed Football film on the list. Scoring a maximum 100% on the critic-reviews ‘Tomatometer,’ and 88% on the Audience ratings...
Next Goal Wins is a tale about the national football team of American Samoa, who were previously best-known for suffering a record 31-0 (thirty-one nil) defeat to Australia in 2001. I’m going to watch the film during the Easter weekend. Apparently, I can view it for 99p on Amazon Prime.
49 inches would come in useful right now...
My old Toshiba TV could do with replacing. It’s a bit behind the times. If I’m going to be watching a stack of sports films during lockdown, I’d love a nice shiny new screen to do it on.
Lucky, then, that I came across this Match of the Day competition to win a 49-inch TV...
I’ve emailed my entry in. It’s free to enter. All you have to do is email your answer (see below), name and contact number to: 13647@motdcomps.co.uk with 13647 in the subject line. The closing date is August.
To stand a chance of winning, all you need to do is get your name in the hat, and answer the question correctly:
Which Spanish club does Gerard Pique play for? The answer is A) Barcelona.
There’s plenty more where that came from…
That 49-inch TV is just one of the fantastic prizes listed right now on the Simply Prizes website. Published by the same company that brings you Across the Leagues, I’m kept in the loop by the ‘comping’ team in the office. They alert me every time a sports prize comes up.
Competitions on the Simply Prizes site right now range from quirky ones like ‘Win a year’s supply of Horlicks.’ To the more valuable and exotic end of the spectrum, where you have the comping Big Three of Cash, Cars & Holidays.
For football fans, previous competition wins have included a personal training session with David Beckham. And a globe-trotting trip taking in the World Cup Final and Champions League Final. That’s one ‘season ticket’ we’d all like to get our hands on.
Get that winning feeling...
There are also competitions with money-can’t-buy, VIP experiences. Sammy, the lady behind Simply Prizes, has won numerous holidays herself over the years, including a luxury trip to Sri Lanka and a cruise from Dubai.
And Sammy has seen some truly mind-blowing prizes up for grabs in the past, such as a trip down to the Titanic in a submersible… the chance to win a private jet for a week with enough fuel included to fly around the world… and even the chance to go into Space.
If you find yourself on lockdown right now and with a bit of time on your hands at home, why not take a few minutes every day to enter some prize draws online…

I’ll be back next week with your next Across the Leagues email.
Have a good Easter.
Best wishes,
