We’re getting ready for the return of La Liga in Spain…

The first game is tonight, and the action then runs on a daily basis with fixtures taking place over the weekend and beyond.

Yesterday, I sent you the first part of our free Standout Stats guide for La Liga, where we looked at some of the top teams & trends for Goals and for Cards & Bookings.

Today, we’re focusing on the Scorer stats – and five players that catch the eye in particular on the La Liga Scorers pages on our members-only website

TOP TRENDS - SCORERS

The big boys…

The top two scorers in La Liga this season are a couple of familiar names. Especially Lionel Messi. The Barcelona living legend is on 19 goals for the season so far. Messi won the Top Scorer award last season, and the year before…

Five goals behind the star man, Karim Benzema is on 14 goals. The Real Madrid striker finished joint-2nd in the scorer charts last season. And with Cristiano Ronaldo long since departed for Juventus, Benzema is the leading scorer for Real.

As you might expect, those two are also at the top of the 2019/20 tables on our site for the Anytime Scorer and First Goalscorer markets…

  • Benzema has landed the most First Goalscorer bets (7), with Messi joint-2nd on 6. The Real Madrid man has made five more appearances than Messi this season, though
  • Benzema has also given the most Anytime Scorer payouts (12). With Messi joint-2nd with 11

Barcelona’s first game back is at Mallorca on Saturday night. Messi missed training last week with a ‘minor’ muscle injury, but his coach says he still expects the Argentinean to play. In the early markets for that game, the bookies have Messi odds-on at around 1/2 (1.50) to score Anytime, and around 2/1 (3.00) to score First.

Real Madrid return against Eibar on Sunday evening. Benzema is 4/6 (1.67) at best to score Anytime, and a top price 11/4 (3.75) to score First.

Five alternatives to consider…

La Liga scorer betting is certainly not just about the top two men, though. And some of the less familiar names can produce returns at much larger odds – and with similarly impressive strike-rates, too…

Besides Messi & Benzema, here are five other players that are flying high in the Scorer stats on our site:

FIRST GOALSCORER

  • Raul Garcia (Athletic Bilbao) – Garcia has 9 league goals so far in 2019/20, and 6 of them have delivered First Goalscorer payouts. That puts the 33-year-old on a par with Messi for that bet this season. Before play was halted, Garcia had scored in 3 La Liga games in a row, with 2 of those strikes landing the First Goalscorer odds

LAST GOALSCORER

  • Angel Rodriguez (Getafe) – the Last Goalscorer market is a less common one, but nevertheless the stats are worth paying attention to, with late goals and substitutes in mind, too. The 33-year-old Getafe forward, Angel Rodriguez has produced 7 Last Goalscorer winners this season – more than any other player in the division. Worth knowing: 19 of Angel’s 26 appearances have been from the bench

ANYTIME GOALSCORER

These three players are all prominent on our Anytime Scorer table in La Liga:

  • Lucas Perez (Alaves) – Perez is joint-2nd with Messi, with 11 Anytime payouts. The 31-year-old Alaves forward had scored in 3 of his last 5 games before the league was suspended
  • Gerard Moreno (Villarreal) – Moreno is on 10 Anytime Scorer payouts for the season to date. The 28-year-old Villarreal attacker had also landed 3 out of 5 before the halt in play
  • Lucas Ocampos (Sevilla) – Ocampos had scored in 4 league games in a row across February & March. The 25-year-old has given a total of 10 Anytime Scorer winners this season
