In Across the Leagues today:

  • UEFA Final Eight, final thoughts…
  • Ante post picks in the pipeline…
  • Our NINE new leagues…

Announcement: our 9 new signings for 2020/21…

The Champions League final didn’t quite live up to the hype, but nevertheless I thought Bayern Munich’s 1-0 win over PSG was an engrossing watch.

Friday night’s Europa League final turned out to be the one with all the goals and drama…

The Diego Carlos Show…

Sevilla beat Inter Milan, 3-2. It was 1-1 after 12 minutes, and 2-2 by half time. A proper, ding-dong cup final.

In terms of our weekend analysis, Sevilla defender Diego Carlos was the man of note. The Brazilian centre back, quite remarkably, gave away a penalty kick for the third straight game, and made it four yellows in four games since the Europa League resumed.

Even more remarkably, Carlos wasn’t sent off for dragging down Romelu Lukaku when he was through on goal…

And of course, the man who went on to pop up in the box to force the winning goal for Sevilla was… Diego Carlos. No wonder the Sevilla camp were clapping the referee when he collected his medal.

That early booking (4 mins) landed the Player to be Booked odds at a top price of 11/4 (3.75). If anyone went one better and got 11/1 for the First Card, then you can let me know by messaging my brand new email address:

UEFA Final Eight a success…

I don’t know about you, but I really enjoyed the new ‘UEFA Final Eight’ knockout ties this month.

That mini-tournament format was only introduced, of course, to get the Champions League and Europa League finished this summer, after the football was suspended in March. But the move to a World Cup-style knockout tournament worked really well.

Whether that idea will be floated in future seasons remained to be seen, though. As Gary Lineker pointed out, no 2nd Legs means less TV games and therefore, less TV revenue for clubs.

This month’s Champions League & Europa League competitions also proved successful for our Across the Leagues picks & analysis. If you follow my big-price picks, then the golden rule to remember is that it’s not about how many winners you have, it’s about the prices…

I named a total of 26 picks in those UEFA knockout events this month. With 19 losers, one void bet, and six winners. Two of the good days produced 16/1 and 25/1 payouts. And that makes all the difference. (Overall, the UEFA Final Eight picks produced a 102% ROI to level stakes at the quoted odds.)

Ante post picks in the pipeline…

Last week I outlined out ante post plan of action for the new season. The new Premier League & English Football League season is just under three weeks away (12th September). With Spain, Italy & Germany to follow after that. Over the new few weeks, we’ll be looking to get some early-bird value in the book.

Top Goalscorer is one of the key markets we’ll be targeting. Last season, one of our star performers was Ollie Watkins in the Championship, finishing 2nd in the scorer chart for a 1/4 odds Each Way payout from Outright odds of 33/1.

The bookies have started to put up their prices for 2020/21, with BetVictor and Skybet joining William Hill with pricing up the Championship Top Goalscorer market over the weekend…

This time, they have the Brentford striker at 10/1 at best. Which is a worryingly short price, considering Skybet also have Watkins as an odds-on 1/2 (1.5) favourite to move to Aston Villa in the transfer window… and end up in the Premier League.

The conclusion there: avoid Watkins this time, for now at least. We’ll be looking elsewhere for a big-price contender or two.

Talking of summer ‘transfer news’…
