In Across the Leagues today:
If you’re a long-time follower of Across the Leagues then you’ll know we don’t usually deal in sour grapes…
But I have to admit I was a bit miffed at missing out on a potential Anytime Scorer winner from my pick Bukayo Sako last night. As much a surprise to me as it was to the Sky Sports commentary team, when Arsenal were awarded a penalty kick, Saka handed the ball to his captain, Martin Odegaard.
The Norwegian duly dispatched the spot kick, in what turned out to be the only goal of the game…
Last season, Saka was on pens for the Gunners. Scoring 2 out of 3 in the league.
Odegaard’s records show that he’d only previously scored one penalty in his senior professional career… and that was when on loan at Vitesse Arnhem in the Dutch league, back in May 2019. Clearly, Arsenal have been practising something in training that we don’t know about.
We move on. And back to those high-scoring Wrexham games we’ve been talking about recently…
Regular follower John B writes in to say he had a big near miss at the weekend. Having backed the 5-3 Correct Score (!) for the visitors in the Wrexham v Swindon game, at 500/1…
“Hi Oliver, you mentioned the 5-3 score for Wrexham. I placed it at 500/1, I noticed too late they were losing 5-3 when I flicked the footy on they just scored making it 5-4, yes I know it ended 5-5. I was kicking myself for not following it then I could have cashed out at least get some of the 500/1 (my usual £2 stake on scores).so close yet so far. John B”
A quirk of the early-season form it may well be, but Wrexham have found themselves 5-3 down in 2 of their 4 games in League Two so far. Losing by that score-line on the opening weekend. And coming from behind to draw 5-5 last Saturday afternoon.
Along with a 4-2 win, and a 1-1 draw. Wrexham currently sit in 1st place on our League Two ‘Totals’ table for both Goals Scored (13), and Goals Conceded (13). Log-in to view all our stats at: www.acrosstheleagues.co.uk.
While Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score bets are the most obvious bets for us to target if this end-to-end Wrexham entertainment continues. The Correct Score market is the place to go hunting for speculative whacky scores – at very fancy prices…
Wrexham’s Correct Scores so far:
Draw 5-5 @ (not listed by most bookies!)
Won 4-2 @ 40/1
Draw 1-1 @ 11/2
Lost 3-5 @ 500/1
We should keep an eye on Crewe in League Two, too…
The Railwaymen have also been racking up the high-scoring results – including a trio of 2-2 draws. And that comes after ending last season with a 3-2 and another 2-2…
Crewe’s Correct Score prices so far in 2023/24 (William Hill):
Draw 2-2 @ 15/2
Won 4-2 @ 14/1
Draw 2-2 @ 8/1
Draw 2-2 @ 15/2
Put Saturday 30th September in your diary… Wrexham v Crewe could be fun! And there’s a bit of local rivalry there, too.
This midweek fixture list is largely dominated by UEFA qualifications ties. I’ll be back on Friday with your weekend preview & picks. With the Premier League, English Football League, Scottish Premiership, and top European leagues all on the radar.
