Two player picks for Everton v Liverpool tonight…

We can’t let a Merseyside derby come along without taking a look at the Cards stats…

Famously, this fixture has produced more Red Cards than any other in Premier League history (23 - with 16 going to Everton players). Bet365, William Hill, and Boylesports will give you 10/3 (4.33) for someone to see red tonight.

Bet365 are just 4/6 (1.67) for Over 4.5 Cards. Although it’s worth noting that that Total Cards bet has only paid out four times in the last 10 Merseyside derbies in all competitions.

Everton have got the Most Cards in four of the last five encounters. Although only two of those meetings were at Goodison Park, with just one of that pair paying out on the hosts. Still, Skybet have Everton as the 5/6 (1.83) favourites for the Most Booking Points here.

Ashley Young was sent off for the Toffees in the most recent clash, at Anfield in October. James Tarkovski was booked that day, too…

  • With 9 league yellows to his name this season, Tarkovski is Everton’s most-carded player this season. Next in line, Jarrad Branthwaite (8) and Idrissa Gueye (7)
  • Darwin Nunez and Wataru Endo have been Liverpool’s most prolific card receivers this term (8 yellows each). Followed by Alexis Mac Allister (7)

Liverpool’s Andy Robertson has been booked in two of his last three starts in the derby. The same goes for Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure - and he’s going in as a bet for me today, available at around 2/1. Robertson can be backed at 4/1 - 3/1, although be aware that the Scottish left-back is on a 12-match ‘clean’ streak with no cards for club or country.

Virgil van Dijk has some ‘previous’ here… since being injured in a collision with Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford in 2020, van Dijk has been shown a yellow in both return visits to Goodison Park. Bet365 make Virgil 6/1 to make that a hat-trick tonight, with other firms around 4/1 in general. Again though, make note that the big Dutch defender has landed card bets in just one of his last 24 appearances in all comps for club & country.

The shortest price in the bookies’ Player to be Carded market for this match is William Hill’s Even Money (2.0) for Amadou Onana. He’s paid out for a yellow in three of his last six Everton appearances.

The aforementioned Jordan Pickford has also been booked in two of the last three encounters with Liverpool. And given his involvement in that bit of ‘previous’ with van Dijk, the Everton goalie catches the eye as a card prospect here…

Pickford has been carded four times already this season - that’s notably more than several of his outfield teammates. We’ve mentioned before how time-wasting is a potential card crime for goalkeepers, even more so these days with more time added-on at the end of games.

With some 4/1 available for the Everton and England no.1 to go in the book again tonight, let’s take it.

Plenty of names mentioned there. And we haven’t even talked about Everton’s Andre Gomes… another frequent flyer in this fixture, when fit. The bookies have him right up there with the card contenders today, at no better than 15/8 (2.88) - and shorter in general. In the 2020/21 season, before he picked up a serious injury that kept him out for a long time, Gomes was booked home & away in this fixture.

We can’t back them all (!)...

The two for me today: Doucoure and Pickford.
